Biography
Dr Gaston Godin received his Ph.D. in Community Health, with an emphasis on behavioural sciences in 1983, from the University of Toronto, Canada. Since that time, his areas of research have included health promotion and disease prevention initiatives, and the study of behaviours in the field of health (e.g., smoking of cigarettes, exercising, use of condoms, adherence to treatment, health professional practices and behaviours, etc.). The main objectives of his research program are to investigate the determinants of behaviour adoption, maintenance and change in the field of health, and to translate this information into interventions (health prevention programs, health promotion programs, health care deliveries and services, etc.).
He is Canada Research Chair on Behaviour and Health (CIHR, Tier 1), 2004-2011. The main objectives of the Chair research program are: 1) to investigate the determinants of behaviour adoption, maintenance and change in the health domain; 2) to improve measurement of theoretical constructs and the prediction of behaviour; and 3) to translate this information into intervention development and evaluation. He is also the principal investigator of several research projects and the scientific director of a research team on the prevention of AIDS and Hepatitis C.
Between 1976 and 1985, Dr Godin was an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Education at Laval University . He then joined as Full Professor the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at the same institution. During these years, he has also been Visiting Professor on several occasions: at Harvard School of Public Health in the 1987-88 academic year; at the Department of Health Education and Promotion, Maastricht University, The Netherlands, in the 1994-95 academic year; at the Department of Psychology, the University of Sheffield, and the School of Psychology at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, in the 2002 academic year.
Finally, he is a member of several scientific associations. In Quebec , he is a current member of the executive committee of the AIDS Research Network (i.e., the prevention track). At the international level, he is the President of the International Society for behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity (ISBNPA) for the year 2005-2006.
